He noted that the university had positively reviewed several pillars proposed under the partnership, including graduate traineeships and internship opportunities for students pursuing industrial chemistry, manufacturing, supply chain management, and accounting.

The collaboration will also focus on joint research and development initiatives, particularly in material science, with emphasis on developing sustainable and environmentally friendly foam technologies suited for the African market.

Under the arrangement, the parties also intend to establish innovation-driven initiatives such as student design competitions and innovation awards aimed at nurturing creativity and problem-solving among university students.

Denis Xu Lei said the company believes stronger engagement with universities is critical in developing a skilled workforce capable of supporting Uganda’s growing manufacturing sector.

“Our partnership with Makerere University is intended to create a strong link between industry and academia. We want students to gain practical exposure to the manufacturing environment while also benefiting from the university’s research capacity to improve innovation and production efficiency,” Denis Xu Lei said.

He added that the collaboration would create a platform for knowledge exchange through guest lectures, academic consultancy, and industry-led mentorship programmes.

“We believe innovation grows where industry experience meets academic excellence. Through this partnership, we hope to support young innovators and contribute to sustainable industrial development in Uganda,” he added.

The two parties are expected to hold further discussions on the framework for a Memorandum of Understanding that will guide implementation of the partnership.

Education and industry experts have increasingly emphasized the importance of university-private sector collaborations in addressing unemployment, strengthening innovation ecosystems, and improving graduates’ readiness for the job market.

The partnership comes at a time when Uganda is intensifying efforts to promote value addition, industrialisation, and research-led economic transformation under the country’s broader development agenda.
